It was Christmas Eve. Fog struck the tarmac at Lindbergh
field. My plane was the last ones to take off from the airport that night. It
was a pretty shaky take off but once we were in the air it was smoothing
riding. Not for long though. We got stuck in the middle of the thunder and
lightning storm. It was very unsafe but we had nowhere we land so we had to
keep going. The plane was struck by lighting and the right wing was taken out and
we started spiraling out of control. The plane was in flames and the emergency
exists were blocked there was no way out. The plane took a dive and smashed
into the ground. Over half the people on the plane died on impact including all
the flight attendants and the pilot. A few children on the plane lost their
parents and were bawling their eyes out. I felt alone. I didn't know what to do
so I just laid on the ground in the pouring rain thinking about how I am going
to die here with all these strangers. There is no hope no one is going to be
able to find us here. We have no shelter the plane is smashed up and burnt to a
crisp. Every person still alive has lost hope and we decide we are just going
to give up because we know that this is the end for all of us.
The author of the article “The Plot Sickens” talks about how
the majority of young writers talk about death and tragedy in their stories. Howe
blames the economy for how young writers are now-a-days. She talks about how
the negative things the economy portrays affect young people and their writing
and causes the majority to talk about death in their work. My writing
substantiates what Howe’s article is about. I wrote my free-write story about a
plane crash where many die as the plane crashes and other are stranded where no
one will find them. Howe states “Of the 20 stories generated by this
assignment, only 5 had endings that could qualify as “happy”-endings, that is,
in which a problem was resolved”. This is also true with most of my creative
writing class. The people I had talked to about this assignment said they wrote
their story about death and things that end in negative ways. Howe was correct
in saying that young writers have these “flaws” in their writing and end most writing
in a sad and depressing way.
